What to know when you Design Your Own Engagement Ring…
The 4 Cs
- Carat is the unit of measurement used to weigh diamonds. Small stones are frequently more expensive than large stones because they rate highly in the other three Cs.
- Cut describes the angles, proportion and shape of a diamond. A perfectly cut diamond optimizes the diamond's natural brilliance and fire through its reflection and refraction of light.
- Color is another key in determining the quality of diamonds. Traditionally, the whiter the diamond the better, but recently yellow diamonds have come into fashion.
- Clarity of diamonds is rated on the GIA Clarity Scale, from Flawless to I3 (imperfect inclusions visible to the naked eye). More valuable stones have less inclusions.
Choice of Metal
Kranich's offers a choice of white gold, yellow gold, or platinum.
Platinum
Of all the precious metals, platinum is the most rare, which raises its value. Platinum is very dense and durable, but that does not mean that it will not scratch. Platinum will actually scratch more easily and show more scratches than 14 karat white gold. Many people find this characteristic of platinum very desirable, as a platinum ring worn daily will develop a "patina", which is best described as a brushed, whitish look. This tendency for showing scratches is a greater concern in ring designs with large smooth surfaces, as these will show scratches much sooner than the same design in white gold.
Gold
In nature, gold is yellow, but through mixing it with alloys it can be turned all sorts of colors, from white, pink, greenish, brown and even purple. White gold can look similar to platinum, but needs to be replated every few years to maintain the white color, adding an ongoing expense an inconvenience.
Today many brides prefer a white metal for their engagement rings and wedding bands, as the metal brings out the diamond's natural brilliance and shine.
